Mouthguards.... Protech Dent to be specific!

So we all know how important mouth guards are right! Check out this pretty new lady.....

Better than conventional mouth guard options:

There are three main types of conventional mouth guards, all based on the soft material EVA:
  1. Stock guards -- These are pre shaped, bulky and uncomfortable, They are hard to breath, drink and talk with. They have poor fitting and users complain about significant drooling.
  2. "Boil and Bite" -- To some extent personal fitting is possible, but they are still bulky and uncomfortable; hard to breath, drink and talk with. Drooling is a problem with these as well.
  3. Dentist made -- The advantage is the custom fitting. They are less bulky, but still not comfortable and hard to drink and talk with. The major disadvantage beside discomfort is that they are far too expensive.
The first two options are too bulky and the third too expensive. None of them are really comfortable.
Protech DentTM intend to change all of that.
Mouth guards are mandated in many sports. However, studies have shown that using a conventional mouth guard still carries a significant risk for dental injuries.

How Protech DentTM mouth guard was developed

For years the material was used in Swedish and American operating rooms by our founder, Jan Akervall MD, PhD, an Ear-Nose-Throat surgeon. The material turned out to be much easier to work with than softer conventional mouth guards. The perfect fitting prevented it from moving during anesthesia and the hard, thin surface turned out to be extremely resistant to stress and forces. 500 surgical procedures have been performed without a single dental injury. Comments were heard from fellow surgeons and anesthesiologists how smart and simple it was to handle. This led to the idea of taking it to the sports market. If it protects teeth this well in the operating room, it has to be good for athletes.
In order to better understand why it worked so well we brought the material to the laboratory and started to test its properties. We found that the material was much stronger than the material in conventional mouth guards. When we modified it with carefully placed perforations and a unique design the strength and comfort.

What other skaters are saying:
Autonomous DerbyGirl These mouthguards are awesome...you can drink & talk with them in...AND...they dont fall out...I would highly recommend them :)

Kristen Adolfi I love how thin they are and that i can talk with it in..but I did get popped in the face the other day and i felt it in my teeth. so over all love it but not so sure how protective it is for a shoulder/elbow to the face

Dana Burgess Ellerby I bought white ones...and OMG! I can breath, drink and speak with it in! LIFE SAVER!!! So worth the money and shipment was quick! ♥

The Beginning

Roller Derby? …….What’s that?

It only seems like yesterday I was invited to come watch a co-worker play roller derby. Sadly I never made it. It was either too expensive for me at the time, $20.00 a ticket x2, plus parking and beer……. or what I thought at the time, “I’ve got more important stuff to be doing”

Months later a different co-worker said she was interested in joining. Maybe I should give you some history on that. I work at HowCool.com, at the time Miss Disruption (Melissa Ratalouski)  and Dezi Von Dropya (Dezi Manos) of the Bakersfield Roller Girls worked with myself and a friend named Reena, amongst the many other employees that were employed by HowCool.com at the time. So Reena, with not that much persuasion from Dezi joined the team, I want to say sometime in March or April. I, on the other hand, took a lot of persuasion. I was skeptical at the beginning. I really didn’t want to get hurt. I remember childhood and even high school sports, I was always hurting something. I was active, but I was no athlete.

After a great deal of peer pressure, I decided sometime in April that I would start May 1st. I was nervous, out of shape and anxiously happy. I wanted to be a part of a group of woman striving for well at the time I really didn’t know what they were striving for, I just wanted to be a part of something, something magically maybe.
So May 1st came and I went to my fist Bakersfield Roller Girls practice. I was nervous, no one really talked to us…….for months it felt like……. We were stuck in a corner, no one really telling us what to do or how to do it. There were brief intros they told us who they were, and we had some skaters working with us when they weren’t too busy training for an event. I loved it though. I didn’t totally feel apart of the group, but after I put the skates on I was no longer doing it for them, I was doing it for myself. I loved how it made me feel, and how it made me want to be a better person. I named myself Burn Rubber Duckie, and Reena was Wolve-Reen.
Three years later, a new league somewhere in the middle, and a new skate name, Got A Minute?,  has made me an addict, a derby addict!

For better or for worse, I’m a derby girl!

It's been a long time

It's been awhile since I have posted here. This Derby season has just came to an end and I make my way into another season.
It the years passing I have lost a couple of loved ones, an office mate and my husbands grandfather. Both life changing events. Derby got me through both. Derby has been my rock this year and it's all I've focused on. I even started my own Roller Derby business. (rollergirlwheels.com) That's really where I spend all of my time. I'm only online for now, however I want nothing more than to have mo own store and just skate life away. Derby and skating brings me so much joy and happiness.

September, 11th I broke my tailbone in a game against CCRD, Central Coast Roller Derby, and now I've been sitting the sidelines. More time to blog you would think haha, just the opposite in fact. I've been watching and learning and thinking....and delivering gear.

There is a lot of changes coming......... I'll be posting all about it soon.

Some of my favorite photos in action this last season:

Brentina Dawn French

Brentina Dawn French
August 18th, 1966 - March 6th, 2010

"I miss you"

Brentina died in a tragic car accident on her way home Saturday night from a local car enthusiast event held every March in Famoso Ca., called March Meets.

Brentina, or as her friends call her, Tina worked with us in the Howcool office. She worked in Accounts Payable/Receivable and managed our payroll, amongst everything else I asked her to do. She was an amazing employee and friend. She was an honest, hardworking, caring and loving individual. She loved her family and she loved life. She had a huge heart and big ear. I know we often talked about everything from boys and love to quick books and filing. It's so hard to type this right now, the tears pour knowing that she won't be there every morning.

If you look at her myspace or facebook profiles she was looking forward to attending March Meets. "With or without you" she posted. Tina lived life to the fullest and understood that everyday is truly a gift. I took this from her facebook profile:

"Most recently I have learned not to take life for granted. To enjoy those around you, for you never know what tomorrow may bring. Not to be so selfish and self absorbed. In this day and age, all of those things are easy to do. You have to work twice as hard to not let the bad part of society swallow you up. Not to just make good decisions, but to make the best decision. Your path and destiny is what you make it. And when you do make mistakes, be sure to humble yourself by owning up to them. Take one day at a time and enjoy every moment with your Family and Friends. Because they are the only ones who truly love you unconditionally."

We ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and be safe!
